Knee pain when running
Cause, analysis and treatment
The three most common knee problems
Misalignments or incorrect strain during movement can cause various types of pain.
SHIN SPLINT
Shin splint syndrome, also known colloquially as “shin splint”, is an overloading of the shin and foot muscles, usually caused by intensive running. This painful sensation often heals very slowly, especially if the muscles are not properly supported or relieved.
RUNNERS KNEE / RUNNERS KNEE
Irritation or overloading of the iliotibial tract is also known as “runner’s knee”. The pain is usually located on the outside of the leg, above the knee joint. This problem often occurs with leg or foot misalignments, different leg lengths and inflexible muscles. Runner’s knee can be easily avoided by correcting the incorrect weight-bearing.
JUMPERS KNEE
Jumpers knee, known in medical parlance as patellar tendinopathy, is caused by overloading of the tendon-bone junction at the tip of the kneecap, known as the patellar tip. Particularly during activities involving jumping and subsequent landing, the knee joint is put under extreme strain by the forces acting on it.
Analysis and treatment – Pain-free movement
In principle, the knee is a very resilient joint that can absorb impact forces well, but only as long as the forces are neutral. If the joint is rotated due to incorrect loading such as a bent, flat or flat foot or a varus or valgus position, the movement is painful. By correcting the incorrect position or strengthening the knee and leg muscles, the incorrect load and therefore the knee pain can be counteracted simply and effectively.
A gait or running analysis can identify incorrect positions and incorrect loads and get to the bottom of the causes of pain. These results serve as the basis for the production of a sensomotoric insole – Senso Sole – which then corrects misalignments in the long term and, above all, sustainably through targeted activation or relaxation of the muscles. In contrast to orthopaedic insoles that only passively stabilize, sensomotoric insoles specifically activate muscle groups to relieve the knee. This enables a lasting change to be achieved.
To enhance the effects of our active soles, after the analysis you will receive individual stretching and strengthening exercises that are tailored to the misalignment. Our aim is for you to enjoy sport again! Book your analysis appointment with us now.
